Feeling less than motivated? Use these work from home productivity tips to put a little pep in your step. Plus, productivity quotes to get you inspired to do more in your work day!Work From Home Motivation Tips

What’s appealing about most work from home opportunities (setting your hours, lack of office politics, working in PJs) can also be total motivation zappers. The lure of the couch, binge-watching TV series on Netflix or an afternoon trip to Barnes & Noble can sometimes seem infinitely more appealing than just about anything having to do with work.

No matter your work ethic, you’re bound to feel unmotivated while working from home. It happens to the best of us.

But don’t worry, there are some practical methods to help get (and keep) yourself motivated. Below you’ll find five work from home motivation tips to give you a little get-up-and-go.

1. Get Showered & Dressed

Thanks to the popularity of The Odd Couple which introduced us to the disheveled, slovenly, sportswriter, Oscar Madison, work from home pros sometimes get a bad rap where hygiene and cleanliness are concerned.  This might be true, for some, but certainly not all (or at least not all the time!).

Full disclosure, there are definitely some days I wake up, roll out of bed, grab a coffee and answer emails, make phone calls and write well into the afternoon without much consideration into the fact that I’m wearing day-old clothes and greasy hair. I mean, who is there to impress in that regard, my cat, Lenny? He’s seen me at my best and worst. And frankly, he doesn’t much care what I look like as long as I keep his food dish topped off and offer a lap to sit on.

And when  you’re working from home, there will be those days when you feel pretty good about the fact that you even managed to get a pair of clean-ish yoga pants on. And if you’re getting work done and staying ahead of deadlines, more power to you!

But then there’s those days when you’re feeling less than ready to tackle the simplest of to-do list items. And that’s when your sweats and tangled hair can really be working against you.

Thankfully, a shower and clean change of clothes can make a world of difference. There’s something about the process of rinsing away the previous day and a fresh set of clothes that can really refresh your entire perspective and put a little spring in your step. As a bonus, you might find that a shower provides you with a little inspiration as well as motivation.

2. Leverage Your To-Do List

Getting things done can, well, motivate you to get more done. If you’re a freelancer, you probably already use a weekly or monthly calendar to help you keep track of looming deadlines. This is a great practice that you should use to help you keep motivated throughout any given workday.

Invest in a small dry-erase board, you can pick one up at Amazon for around five bucks, and each morning (or if you’re a night owl, afternoon) write out each of the things you need to do that day, no matter how small. As you complete even seemingly insignificant tasks, cross them off your list. Why?

The idea is that accomplishments, even the smallest ones, are motivators. That’s right. If you get something done, you’re likely to get more done. Something about checking an item off of your to-do list really gives you a sense of satisfaction and achievement. And you’ll want to replicate that same sense of satisfaction by getting more done.

By the end of the day you’ll have a whiteboard with a long list of completed tasks and a sense of accomplishment that you can parlay into tackling the next workday.

3. Change The Way You Think

Easier said than done, right? Not exactly. Science tells us that motivation is really a psychological thing. Changing the way you think about the things you need to get done can make them easier to do.

When you’re feeling unmotivated, you’re likely looking at a task or a list of tasks and saying, ugh, I have to do this. By telling yourself you have to do something, you’re psyching yourself out. Instead, opt for the more motivational-friendly “I choose to.” As in, I choose to write this 1500-word article about the intricacies of the catalytic converter. When you feel like you’re in charge, you’ll be more compelled to complete a task.

Remember, when it comes to work, there’s not a whole lot you really have to do. You choose to do these things because you like to earn an income, have a roof over your head, food in the kitchen, and an Amazon Prime membership. The next time you feel like you don’t want to do something, remember you choose to do it.

4. Reflect Don’t Deflect

Scientists have found that your motivation really flourishes when you stay true to your values and beliefs. So, if you find yourself constantly demotivated when it comes to completing your work, perhaps it’s time to reflect on why you started doing the work to begin with.

As far as work from home motivation tips goes, this one often resonates. A work from home life is not always easy, but if you can think back to why you opted to get into whatever work from home field you chose (writing, virtual assisting, customer service, etc.) then perhaps it can reinvigorate you, too.

Did you start freelancing as a graphic designer to spend more time with your family or opted to become a virtual assistant to achieve a better work-life balance? Whatever spurred you to work from home to begin with, can also motivate you to get work done.

5. Let Music Move You

When thinking of work from home motivation tips, this is one of my gold-star standards. Even as I write this article, I’ve got my headphones plugged in and have been listening to a random playlist for the last hour or so. I can’t tell you song for song what’s been played, but I do know that it has put a little pep in my writing step.

There’s a reason you see people at the gym and marathon runners plugged into music as they push themselves to the limit. But, why?

Music utilizes our body’s sympathetic nervous system to get a rise out of us. Auditory signals, like those we get from listening to music, can increase heart rate, get blood flowing, and open airways. With such responses, are body is at a state of readiness that allows us to get things done, whether it’s running a 5k or finishing an assignment.

Some studies even suggest that music increases our coordination and is responsible for sending signals to our brain which helps us with perceptual and cognitive reasoning. Perhaps this increased ability to understand allows us to more clearly see an assignment for what it is. With this clarity, we’re able to more easily and readily take on and complete a task.

Thankfully with streaming services, like Amazon Music Unlimited, you’ll never be without your musical motivation.

Can you really make $15 a month just to be online?  Although it may sound unbelievable or too far fetched it is really true.  No, I am not referring to working from home as a Web Search Evaluator for companies like Lionbridge or Appen par time but from a legitimate company that has been around for almost 20 years!  It is a market research company called Survey Savvy partnered with Luth Research that is currently looking for people to join their Savvy Connect Project Gold Program.

Will I really get paid for being online?

Yes.  Savvy Connect will pay you just to have their app installed on your internet connected devices.  This means that as long as you keep it installed, you will continue to earn cash every single month up to $180 every single year!

Will I be required to do any tasks?

No.  That is why I like this program because you are not required to do anything except keep the app installed as you use the internet to check your email, shop online, visit your favorite blog, read the latest news, browse Facebook or anything else you do online.

Is it free?

Yes.  There is absolutely and will never be any charge or fee to you ever.  Savvy Connect will pay you!

Who can join Savvy Connect?

Anyone including teens as long as you are at least 13 years old (with parental consent) can join Savvy Connect and participate in the Project Gold Program.

How can I earn $15 a month?

First you will need to join Savvy Connect here.  After you have joined, you will need to install Savvy Connect on each of your internet connected devices which includes your computer, smartphone and tablet.  You will earn $5 for each device that you download and install Savvy Connect on.  This amount is guaranteed monthly incentives for remaining active in the Savvy Connect community.  Members will also need to maintain a positive standing in the community which includes:

  • Frequently using the devices with SavvyConnect installed or else you could forfeit your earnings.
  • Keeping your SavvyConnect application up to date with the latest software version and updates.
  • Attempting all required SavvyConnect surveys displayed on the SavvyConnect Dashboard. (Note that you will receive repeated emails notifying you of any projects affecting your participation before it happens.)
  • Ensuring quality responses.

Is there a way to earn more money with Savvy Connect?

Yes.  You can take surveys from Survey Savvy and also receive specific engagements and survey opportunities that are for members only of Savvy Connect.

What if I encounter problems with Savvy Connect?

If you have a question or run into a problem, you can contact their support team at savvyconnect@surveysavvy.com or via our toll free support hotline at 855-851-0375 for further assistance.  Remember you can always opt out of the program but in order to be compensated, you must keep the app installed till the 10th of the following month.

Read a few personal testimonials from others how have used Survey Savvy

My name is Rosie and I wanted to some feedback and let you know how pleased I am with Survey Savvy.  I’m currently enrolled in a Savvy Connect project where I receive $30.00 quarterly incentives for having Savvy Connect installed to my PC , phone and tablet which helps me pay for my cell phone bill and purchase extra items along the way. I’m also enrolled in Project Firestone and Project Coronado.  When these projects complete at the end of the month I will be receiving an additional $175.  I’m currently a student and the extra money does help!  I have recommended Savvy Connect to my schoolmates and friends.  I’m so pleased with Savvy Connect and will participate in all projects if allowed.

My name is Yvette and I’m a single parent who works 6 days a week and money is pretty tight around here.  I heard about Savvy Connect through my sister who was always praising how reliable it was and how she always received her incentives on time, so I decided to check it out about a year ago.  I was so pleased with the simple requirements and reasonable requirements.  I decided to enroll in my very first Project Alpine and my incentive was $40.00.  I did exactly what was instructed and received my incentive as promised.  I was sent invites to participate in other projects with detailed instructions on how to participate and what devices had to be installed.  I have participated in 4 projects and I’m currently enrolled in Project Coronado.  This project pays $100 for remaining active with Savvy Connect for 90 days and completing a few short follow up surveys.  This extra cash certainly helps a single mother living paycheck to paycheck.  I would definitely recommend Savvy Connect to my family and friends as well as my co workers.

My name is Russell and I am fairly new to the Savvy Connect community.  I heard from a few friends that by joining, I can receive many incentive rewards up to $100 just by simply installing and keeping the app active on my devices from home.  The first projects I became a part of were Project Ballast an Project Alpine. At first, I was a little timid as to risking my devices, but I soon came to realize that Savvy Connect is the real deal.  I was required to install the Savvy Connect app to my PC, Smartphone, and Tablet for a period of 90 days.  Within a few weeks after the project, I received my $65 as promised.  Ever since then, I have been active and proud member of Savvy Connect.

My name is Edna Mae Wilkerson.  I am 71 years young . After being a house wife for 43 years I have been recently widowed and now find myself living on a very fixed income.  Joining Survey Savvy has been a great way to supplement my income.  Not only do they provide excellent customer/support service.  I am able to participate in multiple surveys at one time.  My most recent surveys were Project Firestone and Project Coronado.  In addition to paying me for my participation they also pay me for all of the people that I refer.  I recommend anyone in need of extra cash to join Survey Savvy.

EASY MONEY!  YES IT’S REAL AND LEGAL.  I am Harper Howard spreading the word about Survey Savvy.  As a starving college student with a full time job my time is very limited.  It is quick and simple.  1. Install Savvy Connect on a Computer, Smart phone and a Tablet.  2. Browse the internet as you normally would.  3. Complete brief surveys within the duration of the project.  4. Receive your cash.

Why I recommend Survey Savvy?

To be honest, it is one of the first legitimate survey panels that I ever joined.  They are legitimate and still pay in cash, no gift cards.  You will receive a check in the mail and I have always gotten paid from this company.  Plus the fact that they allow teens is another reason why I recommend Savvy Connect.  This is also one of the few survey panels that do not load your email with survey invites and Survey Savvy not Savvy Connect is open worldwide.  Please check out my payment proof and review of Survey Savvy on YouTube below.

Are there any other sites similar to Survey Savvy?

Google Opinions Rewards or formerly known as Screenwise Trends and the Points Panel app are other sites that will pay you via gift cards not cash to use the internet.  Qmee is another app that will pay you to browse the web but you will need to install the Qmee browser on your computer and/or mobile devices and visit a sponsored website to earn cash.  You can join Qmee here and they have no payment threshold.  Make sure you browse this blog for additional ways to earn as you use the internet.

Join Survey Savvy

If you could use an extra $180 a year in your pocket, please join Savvy Connect today here to get started and don’t forget to tell your friends.

Want to make more money as a proofreader? You can, if you learn this one skill. In the 16 plus years that I’ve been working as an editor and proofreader, I’ve seen many changes when it comes to working with words. One of them has been the tasks associated with proofreading, and the idea of what proofreaders can and should do for people.

To make more money as a proofreader, and to do it for the long term, you need to make yourself more marketable. And you can do that by learning one particular skill that’ll up your proofreading game. In this post, I draw from my professional experience as an editor to show you how.

A Look At Traditional Proofreading

Proofreading is a surface check for typos. Proofreaders will read text looking for errors in spelling, punctuation, formatting, and basic grammar. They do not go deep into the text, rewrite, reorganize, or make judgement calls on content.

Proofreading is also considered the easiest form of editing, and it’s become a popular way for people to work from home. It’s generally low-stress in nature, flexible, requires a short training period, and doesn’t need a lot of equipment. All you need is your computer, an internet connection, and resources.

The proofreading industry isn’t regulated by any governing agencies, and you don’t need a special certificate, degree, membership, or accreditation to work as a proofreader. However, you do need to be properly trained in specific mechanical know-how, editorial processes, and knowledge of industry best practices. Without proper training, you will lack the knowledge and experience that’ll allow you to work on various kinds of content.

And while many people love the idea of getting paid to read and spot errors, now proofreading has become a lot more than fixing mistakes in text.

How Proofreading Is Changing

In my long career as an editor, I’ve proofread many different types of content including books, articles, reports, and blog posts to name some examples.

I’ve also worked on over 1600 fiction and nonfiction books for traditional publishers like HarperCollins and Harlequin. I do freelance proofreading for some of these companies, and one thing that I can tell you without a doubt, is that 95% of the books I work on require more than the traditional surface-only proofreading skills.

It’s very rare to work on a print book or ebook requiring just a straightforward, surface-only proofread.

Times are changing. From my own marketing process, and from teaching on my blog, I can tell you that clients now want proofreaders who can do more. In my time working with publishers and self-published writers, and businesses and entrepreneurs, I’ve learned that people want someone who can do more if necessary.

They want proofreaders who can also do light to moderate copyediting skills, also known as “basic” copyediting.

Why You Should Learn Light Copyediting

So why is it important for you to learn some copyediting skills? Well, it’s so you can recognize and address problematic issues that could negatively impact a brand’s message or an author’s unique voice.

It’s so you can go deeper into the text if you have to. Clients want you to really care about their content and to make sure everything is on brand, cohesive, and the best it can be. And they want to know that you can fix it so it is.

Light copyediting is sometimes referred to in the publishing world as “high-end proofreading.” Some of you may have even heard proofreading and light copyediting together as “proof-editing.” I prefer to call it “high-level proofreading.” Whatever you call it, it’s clear that you need to learn it.

How To Make More Money As A Proofreader

If you invest in learning light copyediting skills in addition to proofreading, you not only up your skill set, but you also make yourself more marketable, you stand out from the crowd of surface-only proofreaders (and there are a lot!), and my favourite: you can make more money.

Knowing copyediting skills can make you eligible for copyediting projects and other higher-level editing jobs depending on the qualifications. You can also command a higher rate. While trained proofreaders can make as high up as $30 – $35/hour, copyeditors who just work within a light to moderate scale can make as high as $40 – $60 an hour, or sometimes even higher.

Recently, I worked on a project for a government agency that wanted a copyedit on a report. They didn’t want a heavy copyedit that would’ve involved rearranging and rewriting text. They wanted me to do a copyedit to make sure everything was cohesive, the grammar was correct, etc.

Basically, what they wanted was a light copyedit. They asked for a copyeditor, although the majority of the tasks were proofreading. But because there were some light copyediting tasks involved, I was able to quote them my copyeditor’s rate. It was $60 an hour, plus a hefty rush fee since the client wanted it done ASAP.

Mind you, I have many years of experience behind me, so I can command this rate, but it’s a rate that is attainable with the right set of skills and knowledge. And if you have experience in a niche like medical, engineering, or software, then you can definitely go in at a high rate.

So that’s an example of how, with just some extra training and top-notch skills, you can wear two hats and switch them around if need be. If you want to learn more about gaining proofreading and copyediting skills, then I recommend you sign up for my FREE 45-minute workshop webinar. In it, I discuss all things proofreading, content, publishing, and light copyediting.

Click here to enroll in the free workshop.

Do More So You Can Be More

I often get emails from people asking me if there really is room for more proofreaders in the world. The answer is yes.

Think about all the websites, blogs, books, reports, guides, scripts, and magazines in the world that are created. There are over a billion websites in the digital sphere! Because of the internet and smartphones, people have become voracious consumers of content, which in turn is increasing its creation. And people want quality content. Not messy, unprofessional content.

In regards to publishing, ebooks and self-published books have become very popular, and writers are starting to realize that the quality of their books matter if they want readers to become dedicated, raving fans. No one recommends a book that’s shoddy and full of errors.

So there’s a need for proofreaders who can clean up, refine, and help their clients come across as authoritative professionals. Not only do clients deserve more, but you do, too.

You want to stand out from the crowd. There are a lot of proofreaders out there doing the same thing across many niches. How are you going to stand out? That’s why in my course, High-Level Proofreading Pro, I teach my students not only full-stack proofreading skills, but also light to moderate copyediting.

Conclusion

I always tell people that proofreading is like fine wine. It gets better with time. Whether you want to proofread as a full-time freelance career, add on to your services, or want to do it as a side hustle to bring in extra money every month, you want to be able to meet client expectations.

You also want to stick around for the long term, and be able to take your abilities further than the average proofreader. Why not go beyond the basics, so you can do more and be more, right?

How would you like to make $500 or more every single month right from the comfort of your own home?  If so, make sure you use and join PrizeRebel today.  This is a popular survey website that has been around for 11 years helping people (including teens) make money.  Just using PrizeRebel alone can help you to achieve this goal if you follow the tips, tricks, and suggestions that I will provide in this post.

Getting started is extremely easy, free and takes less than 2 minutes.  The first thing you need to do is to make an account with your email address with your first and last name.  After you verify your email address your account is all set up and ready to use.  Remember, PrizeRebel is a site that does not require you to have a PayPal account for you to get paid.  You can request your earnings through direct deposit to your bank account and a whole variety of gift cards from your favorite stores, restaurants, game codes, items on Amazon and more.

Facts about PrizeRebel

  • PrizeRebel has been online since 2007
  • They have over 5.5 million members
  • They have paid out over 6 million dollars in rewards to their members

Tips for Beginners

If you have never done any kind of survey website before, you might want to read through and watch their PrizeRebel tutorials and videos on their support tab.  Before you start taking surveys, here are some very important tips to keep in mind.  Fill out your entire demographic profile.  This will help you to gain access to  surveys that fit your lifestyle.  For example, if you have children include their names and date of birth and also your annual salary, location that you reside in and other personal details because depending on your responses, you will get access to more or additional surveys but not so likely if you omitted this information.

Give truthful answers to questions that you are asked to ensure that you will be paid.  As the popular slogan goes, “honesty is the best policy” especially when it comes to taking online surveys.  Do not use jargon, slang, shortcuts or phrases like “blah, yep”, gibberish or incomplete words or sentences that would be difficult for others to read and understand.  Avoid speeding through surveys because this could compromise your answers and prompt an alert on your account.

Be sure to follow all the instructions and abide by the rules to stay on track and make the most out of your account.  Take advantage of the daily points because they can be repeated up to 20 times a day.  Be aware of the daily challenge tab on the left side of your dashboard because you will gain more points as you reach the point level.

Don’t forget to check your inboxes on PrizeRebel so that you will not miss out on any additional bonus offers by completing surveys, offer walls, etc.  Follow PrizeRebel on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and other social media accounts for free promo codes and contests for additional cash.

How to Earn $500 a Month on PrizeRebel

As you use PrizeRebel, you will notice that there are several ways to earn on this site including online tasks, videos but the best way for most members is by completing online surveys.  In fact, the longer the survey is the more you will earn.  You can expect to spend about 15 to 20 minutes a day completing a survey.  Don’t wait to take a survey because market research companies have a quota that can get filled quickly so complete a survey as soon as possible.  Keep in mind that it is best to take and complete surveys during the week rather than on the weekends because they are limited.  Find a survey provider on PrizeRebel that works best for you and spend time completing their surveys.

Use PrizeRebel every single day consistently to reach your goal of earning $500 a month.  I would recommend that you spend at least 5 hours a day on this site.  The afternoons seem to be the best time to complete their surveys.  If you find that you are getting disqualified for the surveys and you are near the end, please do not hesitate to contact the PrizeRebel support team so they can investigate it and take proper action.

As you continue to earn with PrizeRebel, you will move up to the next level.  All members start off at Bronze and after just earning 1,000 points will go to Silver.  Once you have earned 2,500 points, you will get a discount on your rewards which means you will spend less points to redeem a reward and a bonus added to your points.  Reaching 7,000 points will give you the Platinum status helping you to get a bigger discount for your rewards.  The Diamond level is the highest you can reach with 120,000 points earned.  You will also earn more bonuses, for your referrals and less for redeeming rewards.

If you are unable to spend a few hours each day using PrizeRebel, another great way to earn $500 a month is to refer your friends to join PrizeRebel.  You can earn up to 30 percent (depending on your level status) for every friend that joins PrizeRebel with your referral link.  This is how it works.  If your friend earns 100 points with PrizeRebel, you will earn 30.  If they earn 500 points, you will earn 150 points and so on.  The more friends you refer, the more you will earn and there is no referral cap or limit.  So join today here so you can start referring others.

Additional Ways to Earn

Another easy way to earn is simply by redeeming a reward and submitting a picture or video testimonial of your earnings.  If it is approved, you can earn 50 up to 250 points!  You can also win additional points by completing the most tasks, surveys, offer walls and even playing games, with contests and more on the win tab.  Check it daily to see how much you have earned.

Join PrizeRebel

I would only encourage you to join this site only because I use it myself.  It has proved to be a real money maker for me.  My only regret is that I didn’t know about it sooner.  Whether you use it temporarily, for side income, on an as-needed basis, you will see that PrizeRebel really works especially if you implement some of the tips, tricks and strategies to make the most with this site.  Visit PrizeRebel here to join now.

When someone asks me what kind of movie I’m in the mood for, my answer will — 100 percent of the time — be “rom com.”

While I couldn’t make it halfway through the abridged version of “Jane Eyre” and I still don’t know how “Old Yeller” ends, I can zip through a sweet romance novel in a week.

I’m not supposed to admit that, probably, because I’m a writer.

I should appreciate the classics, complicated literary fiction and Oscar-winning screenplays. But I prefer bite-size entertainment.

And, so everyone will stop judging my mass-market paperbacks and Jennifer-Aniston-strewn Netflix history, I’ll argue it’s actually good for my writing, too.

If you need an excuse to put down “Infinite Jest” and enjoy a beach read this summer, here are some ways consuming bad stories can actually make you a better writer.

1. The story structure is obvious

The easiest critique of rom coms is we all know how they’ll end.

Boy meets girl. Girl hates boy for a few chapters. Boy does something sweet girl doesn’t expect (but we totally did). Girl falls for boy. Boy screws up, but we beg girl to forgive him, because by now we’re rooting for them. She forgives him, and they finally kiss once. The end.

No one watches or reads a romantic comedy to be surprised.

As readers, we enjoy the familiarity. As writers, we can learn from it.

When you’re new to fiction writing, story structure is hard. You think you know what a story arc looks like…but it’s not that easy, is it? And if you don’t hit the right notes at the right points, even amazing characters and a killer premise will fall flat.

In cheesy writing, the plot points are obvious. We see them coming, because they follow a tried and true formula: Conflict, climax, resolution.

Non-cheesy stories follow the formula, too — it’s just harder to see.

Watch predictable movies and read breezy books to familiarize yourself with story structure. Even your most creative and unique story should hit those important plot points.

Bonus points: Watch a trilogy (“Pitch Perfect,” anyone?), because the formula is even more obvious when you see it repeated by the same characters three times over.

2. The writer’s fingerprints are all over it

Beyond cheesy, formulaic writing, there’s just plain bad writing. This is where you can really hone your skills.

Bad fiction writing is rife with traces of the writer.

You sense when a character’s monologue about the breakdown of Western values is basically a personal essay from the author. You feel their valiant attempt at making the relationship between the mother and daughter fraught and relatable. You read oddly placed dialogue as an obvious spoiler for a later plot point.

Good stories don’t feel like they’ve been written. They feel like they just are.

When you read or watch good stories, you get lost in them. It’s tough to think like a writer and learn from them, because you’re so busy enjoying them.

You don’t have to mimic bad techniques to learn from them. Understand what the writer was trying to do — character development, connection with the reader, foreshadowing — and note how they can work into your own stories.

3. You can make it better

Learning what not to do is just as important as learning what to do.

I’ve hardly met a writer who doesn’t lament typos in published novels or the misuse of “lay” in a script. Some of us have even been known to keep a pencil nearby while we read.

Put that writer’s eye to use to recognize bad writing and make it better. Go beyond typos, and note weak sentence structure. Figure out why your eyes gloss over at a piece of dialogue. Recognize poor organization within chapters.

Rewriting bad books could be a great exercise to strengthen your writing muscles.

4. It’s easier to see what’s wrong in bad writing than what’s right in good writing

Good writing is solid inspiration, yes. We should all enjoy it and aspire to put more of it into the world. But it’s hard to learn from.

Good writing is inimitable. If you set out to write a Woody Allen movie, you’re going to fail.

If we could all pinpoint exactly what makes incredible writing so incredible, we’d all be Woody Allen. Or Charles Dickens. Or Dave Eggers. But it’s tough to map a formula for that kind of writing.

Instead, watch a B rom com, dissect the predictable plot and shallow characters and figure out how you could uniquely do that story better.

For a new fiction writer, working some depth into “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” is a way more realistic starting point than trying to write the next “Casablanca.”

Enjoy your guilty pleasures — guilt-free

Next time you want to while away the weekend in the chick lit section of the library, do it without shame. It’s more than an escape from the depth of work and life you deal with day to day — it’s an important step in your development as a writer.

Most of my blog readers and followers have the desire to work from home doing data entry.  Although these jobs are few and far between, there are some companies that still need people to work from home keying in data from their laptop or desktop computer.  Data entry can be a great opportunity to get your foot in the door to working from home because it doesn’t require a lot of skills other than to type fast and accurately, is easy to complete and enjoyable for many if you like repetitive work.

Before I started working from home, one of the jobs that I had was working for the United States Post Office in their remote encoding department as a data entry keyer.  My job was to look at a computer screen and type in the names, addresses and zip codes of individuals written on mail piece images that were not picked up by the scanner.  The pay was great and I could even listen to music while working as long as my performance didn’t suffer.

Work at home Data Entry Companies I have experience with

I also worked for a few work at home companies doing data entry from home in my spare time like Lionbridge, Great American Opportunities, Amazon Mturk and other small gigs.  Because data entry is considered to be an entry-level position, that pay may not be as desirable as the job.  You can expect to earn at least minimum wage or a little higher depending upon your speed and accuracy.

On this website and my other blog at Homebasedmommie.com, I currently post legitimate data entry jobs as they become available.  There is one company called Cass Information Systems that constantly advertises their data entry positions because they are in high demand.  Here are a few details about this position so that you will know what to expect working from this company from home and how you can apply online.

Who is Cass Information Systems?

Cass Information Systems is a provider of transportation, utility, waste and telecom management businesses that was founded back in 1906.  They have jobs in St. Louis Missouri, Columbus Ohio, Greenville South Carolina, Jacksonville Florida as well as the Netherlands, Singapore and the UK.  Cass Information Systems helps businesses to manage 50 billion in expenses and supplier payments accurately.

What kind work at home positions do they offer?

Currently, Cass Information Systems has work at home positions for Offsite Invoice Payment Specialists to work part time.

What are my job duties?

As an Offsite Invoice Payment Specialist, you will be responsible for accurately entering data to pay utility and/or freight invoices and prepare customized reports.  In addition to this, you may be required to enter customer data from sourced documents and coded information, ensure no lost or missing bills, key invoices from images and other related duties.

What are the requirements to work from home for Cass Info?

As stated on their official website, you must be able to type at least 8,000 or 9,000 kph depending upon the position you apply to, can work independently, can retain and follow instructions, have good time management skills and good keyboarding skills or prior keyboarding experience.  Cass Information Systems requires their remote workers to train onsite at one of their locations for 6 up to 14 weeks.  It is recommended that you live near one of their facilities so that you can easily pick up and drop off your work that you have completed.

What is the application process like?

If you meet the qualifications, you will create an account, provide your resume, contact and other employment information.  Cass Information Systems prefers that you submit a cover letter with your desired salary.  The process will take less than 20 minutes to complete from start to finish which is much less than other companies.  You will be contacted by a representative of the company if they are considering hiring you to complete the final steps and start date.

Please note that you have the option of applying and signing up through your social media profiles, if you choose to do so.

How can I apply to Cass Information Systems?

Please visit their job openings page here to apply online and make sure that you live in or near the location listed for their work at home positions.  Also check back and revisit their website to see new work at home openings and go to the weekly job section or Friday freebie pages on this blog.

Tips to Getting a Data Entry Job

  • Clip your nails so to eliminate mistakes and improve your speed.
  • Practice typing in your spare time.  Check out the book, “How to Type Fast” on Amazon.
  • Put more emphasis on accuracy rather than speed in the beginning.
  • Invest in an ergonomic keyboard to minimize muscle strain.

In this age of online everything, your web presence can make or break your freelance career — especially if you’re just starting out.

If prospective clients don’t know you by reputation, they need a quick, easy way to suss out your work, your style and your level of professionalism. While social media accounts can do wonders (having a few thousand Twitter followers never hurt a freelancer’s credibility), you’ll need more than that as your online calling card.

That’s where your online portfolio comes into play. In general, a website that promotes your freelance writing needs to have two things going for it:

  • Uncluttered design: If a prospective client can’t find what they need in less than 10 seconds, you’ve got too much going on. You’ve lost their attention…and a potential gig.
  • Easy-to-read clips: If someone is looking to hire you, their main goal in coming to your site is to read your work and see if they like it. Make it simple for them!

A website that fulfills these two basic criteria is not that hard to create, and you’ve got lots of good portfolio design tools to help you get there. We’ve looked at how Pinterest works as a writing portfolio, but here are six more of the best platforms to highlight your work and help you land your next freelance writing job:

1. Journo Portfolio

On Journo Portfolio, you can create a modern, no-fuss online portfolio. The dashboard is easy to use: customize your site’s look with six distinct themes, and sort your clips into any number of pages or content blocks.

One of the other nice features is the range of ways you can share materials: link directly to clips (just type in the URL and Journo Portfolio will grab the title, publication, date, and content), or upload almost any kind of multimedia, including PDFs, videos and images.

Cool Feature: This platform allows you to blog directly onto Journo Portfolio. That way, you can use to site to highlight your past work and as a personal blog. Say goodbye to managing multiple platforms!

Price: FREE for a name.journoportfolio.com URL (10 articles max), or $5 to $10 per month for the pro versions (which include unlimited pages, article back-ups, and the ability to use your own domain, like www.yourname.com).

2. Clippings.me

Clippings.me was created explicitly for the freelance journalist. It gives you a quick and easy way to show off as many clips as you want, and add just enough detail about yourself to make you seem human. Like Journo Portfolio, you can add links, upload PDFs or embed multimedia pieces, including podcasts.

Clippings.me also offers an open journalism directory where you can list beats you cover and (hopefully) gain access to more prospective clients.

Cool Feature: Simplicity is the name of the game. If you just need to get your work online and aren’t too worried about customization, this is a great choice.

Price: FREE for the basic version (16 articles max), $4.99-$11.99 per month for the pro version (which include unlimited clippings, custom domains, and features like resume hosting).

3. Muck Rack

Muck Rack is a media database that helps connect journalists and PR pros and their platform gives writers a slick way to easily showcase their work.

The best part? Because Muck Rack creates and maintains the portfolio for you (by automatically compiling articles, outlets, and social media profiles) this is one of the easiest options in terms of both set-up and maintenance. You can customize your page by adding a bio, listing your beats, and spotlighting your best pieces.

Cool Feature: As a writer on Muck Rack, you’re likely to receive a lot of PR pitches. One awesome related feature is the ability to post the specific topics or beats you don’t cover which limits the number of off-target pitches coming your way.

Price: FREE for journalists.

4. Pressfolios

Pressfolios is another portfolio site targeted squarely at journalists. It sells itself on two features:

  • The ability to easily show off your work: It’s extremely user-friendly and a good option for less technically-inclined.
  • The ability to back up your work: Every time you upload a piece, Pressfolios automatically clips a PDF version and saves it to the cloud. That way, you don’t have to worry about your writing disappearing even if the original websites go down.

Cool Feature: Pressfolios has a Google Chrome extension that lets you add to your portfolio with one click from a story’s source.

Price: $9.99 per month for the LITE version (up to 250 articles), and $14.99 per month for the Pro version (which includes unlimited stories and a custom domain name)

5. Squarespace

Squarespace is a slick drag-and-drop website builder that offers a stellar visual experience. While this isn’t a traditional portfolio site (nor is it targeted solely at writers), it’s a really good choice if you incorporate design or graphics into your work.

Their templates give off a clean, minimalistic and sophisticated vibe. And their responsive design is rock solid — an important factor when prospective clients want to view your writing on their phones or tablets. While there are many website building tools — like Wix and Weebly — Squarespace comes out ahead for its sleek visual design.

Cool Feature: Squarespace’s 24/7 client support (via email or live chat from Monday-Friday) is top-notch. Being able to communicate with a real human being when you have a question or issue can make freelance life that much easier.

Price: $12-$26 per month for pro versions (which all include unlimited pages, storage, and a free custom domain).

6. WordPress.com

WordPress is the granddaddy of content management platforms. While not specifically geared towards writer portfolios, the joy of WordPress is that you can do pretty much anything you want with it. It’s available as a totally free, no-frills blog; a paid version with more bells and whistles; or the “install-it-yourself-and-do-whatever-the-hell-you-like setup,” as web editor Jon Norris put it.

Your standard WordPress themes aren’t ideal for portfolio work, but search Google for “WordPress portfolio themes” and you’ll have everything you could ask for — WordPress even offers this dedicated portfolio splash page! This is a great platform for people who want lots of options and total creative control (and who don’t mind fussing around with a little CSS).

Cool Feature: Since WordPress is so adaptable, it can be a good place to start if you think you may want something beyond a portfolio site somewhere down the line. That way, when you realize that you want to be both a freelance writer and photographer you’re not stuck on a platform where you can’t show off your other skills.

Price: FREE for a basic blog, the sky’s the limit for more creative options.

What are some of your favorite examples of freelance portfolios?

What are the best job search sites for remote job seekers?   Good question!   If you’re new to the world of work from home or simply want ...

Where should you look for work from home jobs? These are the best job search sites if you want to find a remote job! What are the best job search sites for remote job seekers?

Good question!

If you’re new to the world of work from home or simply want to know what the best job search sites are with remote-friendly leads, don’t worry! Today, there are PLENTY of job boards and sites you should turn to if you want to work from home.

Keep in mind, not all job search sites are created equal — especially for work-from-home. So, be cautious of any sites that ask you to pay for training or material in order to work from home.

Chances are, it’s a scam! Don’t do it!

Instead, look for job search sites and job boards that list a variety of ads, not just a “program” or “system” that promises work-from-home riches for little to no work.

How We Look For Work Has Changed

Before we talk about the best job search sites for remote jobs, let’s talk about how the way we look for work has changed.

Even 10 years ago, if you wanted a job, you’d open up your local paper’s classified section, grab a Sharpie, and start circling promising print ads.

Then, you’d fire up the ol’ computer, print out a couple of resumes (make your resume remote friendly btw), and hand deliver them with a handshake to a couple of different companies.

It was likely that you’d get a phone call soon thereafter for a formal interview. And, if all went well, eventually offered a job.

Today, with advances in technology and a more streamlined approach to human resources, most of the hiring process is done online — from the job posting to application submission and, yes, even the interview! This, of course, is especially true for remote job seekers. You won’t be expected to come into an office to work. So, it only makes sense that you won’t be expected to come into an office to fill out an application or interview.

Why It’s Important To Be Visible Online

Because the world of recruiting for remote work has gone almost entirely online, it’s important for work-from-home job seekers to have a solid online presence.

After all, a whopping 80% of recruiters will google potential candidates before they invite them to interview. What Google says about you can make or break your chances of getting an interview (and eventually getting hired!).

Your online presence, as a whole, is collectively known as your personal brand. Think of your Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook pages. These are the profiles easily found via a quick Google search. They also happen to be the very things recruiters are browsing to find their next hire.

If you’re worried your online presence is less than perfect — fear not! There are ways you can polish up your digital footprint so you knock the socks off of any recruiter.

Remember, when looking for a remote job, your online presence is the only impression a recruiter will get of you. There is no in-person meeting or local interview you can use to strut your stuff. Instead, your online persona will do all the work for you. To say it’s important to take a serious look at your professional presence online is an understatement!

Get started today when you set up your own personal website that gets you hired. It’s the first step you should take to get yourself noticed (in a good way) online. Follow that up with a fresh LinkedIn makeover. A powerful profile can help job offers come your way in no time!
