RANCHI: A minister in the cabinet of Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren tested positive for Covid-19 late on Tuesday night.
The minister, who is a MLA of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was shifted to the Covid-19 ward of Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) around midnight, the hospital sources said.
Besides the minister, another MLA of JMM also tested positive in Dhanbad on Tuesday evening. Dhanbad deputy commissioner Amit Kumar said the 53-year-old legislator was shifted to Covid 19 ward of BCCL Central Hospital at night. On Monday evening, he had dined with 150 people at a function in Sindri.
The two cases sent staff of Soren’s office into a tizzy. “The minister and the MLA had recently met the CM,” a source in Soren’s office said.
Jharkhand’s Covid-19 tally surpassed the 3,000 mark on Tuesday night after 141 new infections were reported from 10 districts. This was the biggest spike in the state since June 8, when 187 cases were detected.
Besides fresh infections, two casualties were reported. Both the deceased, a 58-year-old man and a 89-year-old woman, are from Dhanbad. With it, the state’s death toll rose to 22.
