How TPG Readers Ranked the Best No-Fee Credit Cards of the Year

The first-annual TPG Awards recently took place in New York City, celebrating all the best in travel, from credit cards and loyalty programs, with a special honor for Captain Sully and a performance by Bebe Rexha to boot.

You can view the full list of TPG Awards winners, but if you’re curious just how the nominees in each category stacked up, we’ve got your back. Today we’re taking a look at the best no-fee credit card category, where the Chase Freedom Unlimited took the title but three other cards were also contenders. Here’s how they ranked, from most to fewest reader votes:

Chase Freedom Unlimited Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card Chase Freedom Citi Double Cash Card

Both the winner and the finalists were determined by TPG readers, who voiced their opinion in two rounds of voting. The Freedom Unlimited‘s first-place finish in this category is no doubt a reflection of the card’s versatility; while it’s technically a cash-back card that earns 1.5% back on every purchase, it becomes more powerful when you pair it with a Chase Ultimate Rewards-earning card, since you’re then able to redeem your cash-back rewards as transferrable points, bringing your return on spending to 3% based on TPG’s valuations. For this reason, it’s one of our top picks for everyday spending.

The Amazon Prime Rewards card’s second-place finish, meanwhile, is a reflection of just how popular Amazon is as a retail destination, along with Whole Foods, since the card earns 5% back at both of these merchants. Note that while the card itself has no annual fee, you need an Amazon Prime membership ($119 for a year) to have the card. The Chase Freedom is another strong pick thanks to its rotating bonus categories and the ability to transfer cash-back rewards to points if you have a UR-earning card, and the Citi Double Cash has a straightforward value proposition of 1% cash back when you buy and another 1% back as you pay your statement. All great options, especially considering they cost you nothing out of pocket.
